India recorded more than 5.5 lakh domestic trademark filings in 2024–25, the highest ever in a single year, according to Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal. The surge reflects the strengthening of India’s institutional framework for intellectual property protection and its growing focus on innovation-led economic growth. Citing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of “Ideate in India, Innovate in India, Make in India and Make for the World,” the minister highlighted the role of the Trade Marks Act, 1999 in safeguarding brand identity for over two decades. Reforms such as digitisation, policy initiatives, and ecosystem support have improved India’s global IP standing. Pharmaceuticals, veterinary, and sanitary preparations accounted for the highest registrations, underlining the expanding scope of innovation and fair competition in India’s marketplace.
