Nap time for Khanyisa after a long day with her herd
Sleepy baby elephant coming through!
Khanyisa heads to her nursery with carer Reply after an evening milk bottle, following a long day of walking in the wild with her herd. Lammie follows quickly after her, always happy to be by the side of her elephant buddy.
This particular day, there was no time for extra bana grass nibbles inside. Khanyisa only had sleep on her mind and down on the hay she lay, closing her eyes, ready for a peaceful snooze. You can see her beautiful blue white eyes opening here and there as Adine sits beside her, singing her a little lullaby.
You can see her tiny trunk wrapped up and the top of her trunk expanding and contracting as she breathes deeply. The trunk is simply a 'stretched' nose with two nostrils running the full length, with air coming in and out as the elephant breathes.
There is certainly a lot happening in that little trunk of Khanyisa’s! The end of it, for instance, bristles with thousands of whiskers and is sensitive to the slightest touch. Each bristle is attached to a single nerve that feeds directly into the brain, making the tip 10 times more sensitive than a human finger.
Lammie watches over Khanyisa as the little calf snoozes, wondering perhaps when her friend will wake up so they can resume some evening playtime.
