Stopping Thinking in Meditation is Not the Goal

Stopping thinking in meditation or controlling thoughts is not the goal, Rupert explains, when a man asks him if he has many thoughts when he meditates or is he pure awareness. In many traditional spiritual practices, 'thought' is something to be got rid of, to be denied.

In non-duality the approach to thinking is different. This is not a way of discipline, practice, effort, suppression. It's a way of understanding, a way of recognition.

The goal is not getting rid of thoughts or the ego. Nor are we trying to control, still or stop the mind, sometimes referred to as calming the monkey mind. Thoughts come and we have no desire to stop them or change them. The goal is to recognise our true nature and the nature of reality, then to express that understanding in our activity in the world.

A path of discipline, effort or practice would be a path of the separate self. This is a way of understanding that that separate self does not exist – we can't change or discipline what does not exist. There is not awareness and a separate self. There is only awareness or being, plus thoughts and feelings that make it seem as though awareness is limited. Therefore, the separate self is an imaginary limit of awareness. An imaginary limit awareness has of itself.

God's being clothes itself in thoughts and perceiving, but ultimately there are no independent beings or selves. There is only one being, clothed in human or limited experience.

So this is a way of recognising who we are, not disciplining who we are not.

Thinking can be a beautiful tool, a beautiful activity. Our thoughts and feelings and in time our activities and relationships will all change as our understanding changes, but that is a by-product of this understanding, not the goal.
