Overcoming Addiction to Guilt
Is it possible to have an addiction to guilt? A woman notices that her constant feelings of guilt had been a blockage in her mind to any allowance of herself to be happy. She doesn't want to live that way any longer, and wonders if it is possible to be addicted to fear and darkness.
Rupert talks about how the habit of this addiction to suffering forms in us. And explains that we are already free of guilt and shame, we just haven't seen it yet.
Early on in your life your identity, your sense of yourself was merged with this traumatic experience. So although it was very unpleasant, and you felt fear, guilt, shame, sorrow etc, your identity was invested in it and therefore the survival of your identity required the survival of these feelings and hence, although you wanted to get rid of them, at the same time you couldn't let go of them because your identity was invested in them. But now you have recognised that your essential identity is not compounded of fear, guilt, shame. You've taken a step further back, you realised no, my essential identity is inherently free of these, these feelings do not define me, and therefore you can let them go, without feeling that you are dying, without feeling you are going to disappear, and therefore you can let them go, freely Before you didn't feel you could let them go, because your identity, your sense of yourself was invested in them.
Sue, you're on the other side of the fence already, You're already where you want to be. You just didn't notice it before, because your identity was so entangled with the feelings of fear and guilt and shame and sorrow, but now you have recognised or now that you are beginning to recognise that your essential nature, just the awareness of being is prior to these feelings and independent of them. Your identity is no longer invested in them, You can let them go without feeling "I'm going to die", you are already that, you are already there, you are already on the other side of the fence, you've always been there. You're not going to progress, these feelings are going to be liberated from their hiding place in the body and gradually probably dissolve, leaving you as you always are, but didn't previously realise.
