It’s the Christmas message in a nutshell: Johann Sebastian Bach’s cantata ‘Dazu ist erschienen der Sohn Gottes’ (BWV 40) performed by the Collegium Vocale Gent conducted by Philippe Herreweghe. The concert took place in 2016 in the Saint-Roch church in Paris.

The sacred cantata for Boxing Day was first performed by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685 - 1750) in Leipzig on December 26, 1723. The text contains the Christian message of salvation in its entire theological scope. With special reference to biblical texts and motifs, the meaning of Christ’s incarnation is presented, which lies in the overcoming of the original sin that came to man from Adam. This message is presented using contrasting concepts: On the one hand, there is the realm of sin, represented by Satan, the devil, the serpent, hell and damnation; on the other hand, there is redemption, alluding to paradise, to eternal peace, to joy and grace.

What is unusual about the Christmas cantata ‘Dazu ist erschienen der Sohn Gottes’ is that it contains three stanzas from old chorales by other composers: Choral No. 3 is the 3rd stanza of the song ‘Wir Christenleut’ by Kaspar Füger; Choral No. 6 is the 2nd stanza of the song ‘Schwing dich auf zu deinem Gott’ by Paul Gerhardt; and Choral No. 8 is the 4th stanza of the song ‘Freuet euch, ihr Christen alle’ by Christian Keymann. It is not known who created this amazingly homogeneous text compilation of the Bach cantata.

The internationally renowned conductor and Bach expert Philippe Herreweghe founded the Collegium Vocale Gent in 1970 and together they performed early music as a kind of historical performance practice. In 1989, the orchestra of the Collegium Vocale Gent joined the choir, which is made up of first-class international performers of baroque music. With the Collegium Vocale Gent choir and orchestra, Herreweghe has since produced landmark early music recordings, including the cantatas of Johann Sebastian Bach.
