ADHD, Beethoven’s “Pastoral” and the threatened nature of Iceland | Music Documentary

Icelandic jazz band ADHD: would you have expected that these four musicians would get inspiration from Beethoven’s Sixth Symphony, the “Pastoral?” After the jazz musicians travel in an old bus to a remote house at Kleifarvatn lake, they start their recording session by listening to Beethoven’s nature symphony! Beethoven’s “Pastoral” is as suited to this breathtaking northern wilderness as it is to the band's energetic jazz rhythms.

The jazz band ADHD was founded in 2008. The musicians are:
Óskar Guðjónsson (saxophone), Ómar Guðjónsson (guitar and bass), Thómas Jónsson (keyboard) and Magnús Trygvason Eliassen (drums).

ADHD plays concerts all over Europe. Many of the people they play for have visited Iceland and are familiar with the overwhelming nature of the island, which is situated far in the north – and they know how threatened it is.
For example, Iceland's glaciers: Vatnajökull is the largest one. It covers eight percent of the country’s total area and is still up to 1,000 meters thick in places. But in 200 years, even a colossus like Vatnajökull will probably be gone – like the 400 other Icelandic glaciers. In 2019, the first glacier disappeared, the Ok.

The musicians are mindful of their responsibility towards nature. They have already experienced the speed with which the landscape has changed.

In 2020, the world celebrates the 250th birthday of Ludwig van Beethoven. With his Sixth Symphony, the “Pastoral,” Beethoven expressed his romantic appreciation of nature, and created a musical testament to that appreciation. Nature continues to inspire composers to this day – as does Beethoven’s Sixth Symphony. Now, that work has also inspired the “Beethoven Pastoral Project," captured by Deutsche Welle in the documentary film, “The Sound of Nature.” It presents five musicians and ensembles on five continents who are currently exploring the themes of nature and the environment. ADHD is one of the ensembles portrayed.
