Sarah Willis on the challenges of playing Mozart in Cuba

Berlin Philharmonic horn player Sarah Willis has performed in Cuba several times. She talks about the challenges musicians face when playing in hot, humid weather. That includes the effects of the climate on the instruments themselves, as we see with a visit to a Havana violin repair shop. Sarah and two members of the Havana Lyceum Orchestra also talk about other difficulties faced by Cuban musicians, such as concerts cancelled at the last minute, or problems with transportation.

Sarah Willis is a British-American French horn player. In 2001, she joined the Berlin Philharmonic, becoming the first female member of its brass section. She first travelled to Cuba in 2017 to teach a French horn master class, and was so impressed by the musicians she met there from the Havana Lyceum Orchestra that she had the idea of working with them on a recording. The result is the album "Mozart y Mambo," and Deutsche Welle was there to accompany this joyful and unique musical collaboration in a documentary entitled "Mozart y Mambo: A Cuban Journey with Sarah Willis."
