"I smashed my family tea set": Evgeny Granilshchikov on the nature of Russian colonialism
Artist and independent film maker Evgeny Granilshchikov, winner of numerous national and international awards, talked to Russian Art Focus about the lack of reflection in contemporary Russian society on Soviet history, and the amnesia amongst younger generations surrounding recent historical events. Despite being best known for his films, Granilshchikov presents himself as a multi-media artist where he combines several different techniques in one project. As he shares his vision on video art, what inspires him most, he also reflects on the events which took place in Belarus last summer, as well as other political upheavals in Ukraine and Russia, and how they have became subject matter in his art, asking what is the nature of Russian colonialism.
The video was filmed during Granilshchikov's exhibition "Circumstances of Insurmountable Time" in the GUM-Red-Line gallery and features work from this exhibition.
