Number Properties (GMAT Course, Segment 2 – Problem Solving & Data Sufficiency Math Concepts
Numbers Defined
- Integer : Numeric Value with Only Zeros After Decimal Point
- Divisor or Factor : Number that Divides Into Another Number Evenly
- ie. 4 is a Divisor or Factor of 12
- Multiple : Number that Multiplies from Another Number
- ie. 24 is a Multiple of 12
- Largest Factor = Smallest Multiple = Number Itself

Four Basic Functions
- Sum | Result of Addition
- Difference | Result of Subtraction
- Product | Result of Multiplication
- Quotient | Result of Division

Evens & Odds Defined
- Even Integer : Integer Divisible by 2
- Odd Integer : Integer Not Divisible by 2
- 0 is Even

Computing Evens and Odds
- Only a Sum or Difference of an Odd and an Even is Odd
- Sum or Difference of Two Evens is Even
- Sum or Difference of Two Odds is Even
- Product of Two Evens Remains Even
- Product of Two Odds Remains Odd
- Product of an Odd and an Even Becomes Even
- No Consistent Rules Defined for Quotients

Properties of 1
- Product of Any Value and 1 is Itself
- Quotient of Any Value Other than 0 Divided by 1 is Itself
- Quotient of Any Value Other than 0 Divided by Itself is 1
- Implicit Exponent of Any Value is 1

Properties of 0
- Only Non-Negative & Non-Positive Value
- Adding or Subtracting 0 from a Value Results in No Change to Value
- Product of Any Value and 0 is 0
- Quotient of Any Value Divided by 0 is Non-Real
- For Purposes of GMAT Division by 0 is Not Defined
- Absolute Value is Distance from 0 on Number Line
- Absolute Value ≥ 0 – ie. |-4| = 4

Real Numbers Defined
- Can be Expressed as a Value on Number Line
- Rational Numbers Can be Expressed as Fractions – ie. ½ or ⅓
- Irrational Numbers Cannot be Expressed as Fractions – ie. Π or √2
- Only Convert Irrational Numbers to Decimal if Approximating
- Π ≈ 3.14 | √2 ≈ 1.4 | √3 ≈ 1.7
- Compare Irrational to Rational Values to Convert to Number Line
