Limited Quantities

Differentiations
- Between – Two items exactly

- Among – More than two items
- I can select my toppings from among the seven condiments offered

Countable Quantities
- Fewer – There are fewer cats in the yard today.
- Many – There are many cats in the yard today.
- More – There are more cats in the yard today.
Uncountable Quantities
- Less – The yard is less clean.
- More – The yard is more crowded.
- Much – The yard is much dirtier.
- Much, rather than more, modifies another comparative or superlative

Comparing Numerable Quantities
- Alternative structures and rules exist, but these most likely on EA
- Greater – Increase can be represented as a number
- The population of California is greater than that of Canada.
- Higher / Lower – The compared item is economic or mathematic
- The GDP of California is higher than that of Canada.
- Canada’s GDP is lower than California’s.
- Less – Decrease can be represented as a number
- California’s area is less than that of Canada.
- Over / Under – Compared against a defined standard
- California’s GDP is over $3 trillion per year.

Causalities
- Because of – Adverbial phrase that must follow an action
- The dog ran away because of the shrill noise.
- Due to – Adjectivial phrase that must follow a noun and “to be”
- The dog’s fearful response was due to the shrill noise.
- Since – More correctly indicates passage of time than causality
- Since it was young, the dog has disliked shrill noise.

Conditionals
- If – Introduces a condition indicating cause and effect
- If we score next, we will win!
- Whether – Introduces two alternatives
- I wonder whether it will rain today.
- Whether or not – Introduces an irrelevancy
- Whether or not we win, we’ll make the playoffs.

Both
- Used to combine two items of equal stature
- Uses “and” as only acceptable conjunction
- Harshita was both hungry and tired.

Not only... but also
- Used to present two items, the second of which is somewhat surprising
- Items must be parallel both conceptually and grammatically
- Harshita was not only hungry but also tired.

As well as
- Similar in meaning to not only... but also
- Does not create a compound (plural) subject
- Harshita, as well as John, was late.
