Kenseiden, 1988 Sega (20 From Sega Master System #15)

Cool hack-and-slash game where you control the samurai Hayato in 16th-century Japan. Your goal, as you slice through evil spirits, warlocks and whatnot, is to recover the stolen five scrolls and the Sword of the Dragon Lord. There are up to 16 different areas to explore, and 5 bosses to fight before facing the final opponent, Oda Nobunaga (an actual historical figure in Feudal Japan, though slightly different looking than in this game!). You can even backtrack over areas you already went through, for points or maybe extra items. As you beat bosses, you gain new abilities-- these include higher jumps, stronger overhead strikes, a "berserker" attack, etc. There will also be helpful icons you can collect in the game that can help you; they include gourds that restore a good deal of life, swords that increase your offense, charms that increase your defense, green charms that refill your life when it runs out, wooden dolls that grant you an extra life (you also get one every 20,000 points), and I guess there is an item that grants you a continue but I've never seen it. Though there are 16 areas numerous are repeats of other areas, though with more difficult foes. At least 2 areas are "practice" areas-- you will start all the way over any time you get hit by arrows or spikes and if you make it through the course without a scratch you get a "defense-up" charm. You can bypass them though by going past the stairs leading up to the practice dojo. The replay value is high due to all the areas you can visit that you probably missed the first time through, plus you can simply accustom yourself to certain enemies this way. Great title with nice attention paid to the mythic look at Feudal Japan often seen in Japanese fiction. See you soon for game #14!
