New Zealand Story (The), 1988 Taito (20 From 1988 #19)

Achingly cute omni-directional scrolling platform jumping/maze game in which you star as a kiwi bird trying to rescue its contemporaries captured by a leopard seal. To do so you must wind your way around said maze, sometimes by foot and sometimes by flying ride when no platforms are available to scale. You must reach the end of the maze, where a fellow kiwi bird is waiting in a cage and you simply touch the cage to move on to another maze. There are 5 worlds to explore with 4 mazes in each, and the 4th area usually has a boss fight. Good news: most enemies you can touch without dying! Bad news: most of the enemies throw lethal projectiles at you. Bombs, stones, lasers, spears, arrows, boomerangs, etc. will take you out and sometimes these projectiles fly at a different angle than you may expect. While hitching the ride into the sky, enemies will also try to take out your ride, causing you to fall (often onto a bed of spikes, which are ever present in this game!). Your kiwi bird can't fly (it's a non-flying bird) but it can still get around with said rides, and its ability to hop up on platforms, as well as swim (it sports a scuba mask underwater, but still needs to surface before it runs out of oxygen). There's plenty of cool other aspects to this game, like upgrading your firepower from basic arrows to bombs, bouncing fireballs and lasers; as well as getting special items from defeated enemies like a smart bomb, a warp to the end of the stage, a clock to freeze enemies for a short time, limited invincibility, speed up, etc.; a free life with the letters E-X-T-E-N-D (sound familiar?); warp portals; and a way to return to the game if you run out of lives (you go to Heaven!)! Deep game with cuteness overload, but also very tough and frustrating at times. This didn't appear much in US arcades that I'm aware of but still deserves to be in any Taito Classic compilation for home systems/PCs. Go Tiki!
