Mortal Kombat 3/Ultimate MK3, 1995 Midway (20 From 1995 #12)

Inventive sequel (and its upgrade) from the famed MORTAL KOMBAT series. Some new characters are added, some are removed from the previous game, and there are a whole bunch of hidden secrets and hidden characters.. but the biggest additions IMHO are the new "RUN" button (which can lead to some devastating quick combos) and the new "ANIMALITY" that turns you into an animal that kills your opponent at the end of the deciding round. If you play Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 (or Ultimate MK3 or UMK3 for short) you get more characters and more hidden characters to choose from, an extra difficulty level, some new backgrounds and hidden goodies, better opponent AI, some new moves, and a new 2 on 2 mode as well as an 8 player (alternate turns) tournament mode. Hidden mainstays Smoke and Noob Saibot are also unlockable in UMK3. For me, the RUN button is kind of lame and I prefer the double-tap of the joystick to retreat or advance quickly that was in most other VS fighting games of the time. Still these games are well-worth checking out, as the digitized graphics that wowed us with the first game in the series is still pleasant enough to the eyes. One last thing to remember: If you can't seem to perform a Babality or Animality, try not to use a block for the former and let the opponent recover from a "Fatality Prompt", known as a "Mercy", for the latter (even then I had a hell of a time trying to get them to work-- an unfortunate bugaboo in the early MK series).
