Drones are spotting more and more spotted frogs in Oregon

Oregon's spotted frog benefits from drone monitoring on Big Marsh in Deschutes National Forest.

The Forest Service increasingly uses drone technology to support initiatives such as forest restoration, wildfire suppression, research and law enforcement. Big Marsh, on the Deschutes National Forest in Oregon, benefitted from drone usage. Big Marsh saw significant changes in land use over the past 80 years, threatening aquatic wildlife like frogs. Drone footage showed that Oregon’s spotted frog’s habitat benefitted from restoration. The Forest Service conducted stream restoration and pond excavation at Big Marsh to restore the wetland ecosystem. Using drones, scientists were able to monitor water levels and vegetation responses during restoration actions. Footage was also able to track Forest Service efforts to create resilient forests for current and future generations.
