Its purpose was to preserve certain select rivers that possess outstandingly remarkable scenic, recreation, geologic, fish and wildlife, historical, cultural, or.other similar values. These select rivers would be preserved In free-flowing condition and their Immediate environments would be protected and managed for the benefit and enjoyment of present and future generations. In 1984 Congress designated portions of the Tuolumne as a Wild & Scenic River. The Tuolumne originates from snowmelt off Mounts Dana and Lyell In Yosemite National Park before flowing across the Stanislaus National Forest The river contains some of the most noted whitewater in the Sierra, and Is described by river experts as one of the most challenging runs In California,
