Twisted History of Well-Loved Fairy Tales

Once upon a time, well the 26th of February to be exact, is “Tell a Fairy Tale Day”. This unofficial holiday encourages readers from around the world to indulge in their favourite fairy tale. Not all fairy tales have happy endings though, and we’re going to get lost in a story or two and find out what really happened in those familiar tales.

6 - Rumpelstiltskin
Not one of the most popular stories, because even the tame version is just a little creepy but in a nutshell here’s the synopsis. A miller makes a crazy promise to a greedy king that his daughter can spin straw into gold. When she’s unable to deliver, and she’s weeping in the room full of straw, an ugly little man appears and promises to do it for her in exchange for her first born. The king marries the miller’s daughter and they bear a child. The ugly little man comes for the kid and she is devastated. He agrees to forget the promise if she can guess his name. She does, with the help of the king’s staff and the baby is safe and the man disappears. The Grimm version is slightly different. When Rumpelstiltskin realizes he’s been beat, he tears himself in half.

5 - The Fox and the Hound
The movie that you have come to love was released by Disney in 1981, but the original story by American writer, Daniel P. Mannix, is a little different. In his version the fox leads one of the man’s dogs to the railway line on purpose and a train hits the pooch. The master is so angry, so he trains a dog – the one who becomes friends with the fox in the movie – to chase the fox relentlessly until the fox drops down and is a gonner thanks to sheer exhaustion.

4 - The Pied Piper of Hamelin
The legend of the Pied Piper dates back to1264 and is a little different to our version which sees the Piper removing the rats from the village of Hamelin with the promise of a good payment. When the village didn’t pay up, he uses the same musical instrument to lure the children from the village and they quickly apologize and all ends well. Historical records show that the Pied Piper was a real person, but it’s the retelling of the story that has altered the facts. Some believe the Piper was meant to represent death and that the children were taken away due to the plague, but that took place many years later.
Other theories suggest that the parents let their children go willingly to be involved in a Children’s Crusade, but didn’t make it when they could cross the Mediterranean.

3 - Beauty and the Beast
Our version: Belle ends up sacrificing herself in place of her father to go and live with a beast, who’s property they’ve accidentally trespassed on. He is mean, ugly and difficult and she falls in love with him and realizes the good that lies beneath. The end. In the original story by Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve, Belle has sisters who were always extremely jealous of their sister. Belle gets permission to visit her family for a week and arrives decked in jewels. It’s too much for her jealous sisters to handle, so they try convince Belle to stay longer so that the Beast gets really angry and hopefully devours her on her return. And you thought you had family issues.
2 - Pocahontas
She talks to the trees; her bestie is a racoon and she falls in love with John Smith and all is hunky dory. Not quite the case as you’ll soon hear. Her real name is Matoaka and she was the daughter of Chief Powhatan. They were from the territory that is now known as Virginia. The storybooks say that the locals kidnapped John Smith and she saved his life. It’s believed this is false, because Smith was about to receive an honour by the chief, and the chances of him having contact with the chief’s daughter were slim. She eventually left her tribe, married another Englishman, converted to Christianity and took the name Rebecca.
