So you are interested in taking better photographs with your DSLR and would like to take photos that look professional? Then I’ve got that the secret for you. You are going to COPY THE PROS!! But don’t worry, you won’t get in trouble with my secret method. You’ll just impress your friends…

In this tutorial, I will show you the photography lesson that took my photos from good to great!

The secret is to LITERALLY copy what professional photographers do. Sort of.

Of course, you don’t need to follow the photographers around. They’ve published all the clues we need.

Whether you want to take better photos with your Canon, Nikon, Sony, or any other DSLR or full function camera, this will work.

The trick is to get a few examples of some professional photos, evaluate them on 6 criteria, and then go out and replicate the techniques to get a very close image (knowing that the actual subject may be different, of course).

Once you have a few professional photos you want to copy, study them for these aspects:

1. Composition - how was the photo composed? are they using rule of thirds, the golden ratio, or some other style?
2. Lighting - is it natural, artificial, or both? Time of day? Direction of light source(s)? Harsh or soft?
3. Depth of field - are they doing an Adam Ansel and using a very deep depth of field, or did they use an open aperture?
4. Shutter speed - are they using a fast shutter to freeze action? A slow one to show the motion? Somewhere in the middle?
5. Focal length - are they using a wide lens? A mega zoom? Somewhere in the middle? Take a look at the photo to decide.
6. Story - wha is the story the photography is conveying? Are the subject(s), foreground, and background interacting?

Try these techniques with some professional photos this weekend and see how you do.. This will go a long way to develop your photographic eye!
