What is Depth of Field in Photography - using aperture and distances to create blur or sharpness.

Depth of field is an important aspect in photography and should be understood by all photographers. It is directly related to the artistic blur you see in amazing portrait and macro shots, and impacts the clarity in landscape work.

There are a few things that affect depth of field.

The first is aperture. The wider the camera's aperture (ie the lower the number), the more blur you will get in the background and foreground. if the aperture is narrow (high value), then the foreground and background will be more in focus.

The next is the distance to your subject. The closer you are to your subject, the more the background and foreground will be blurred.

And finally the further the background and foreground are from the subject, the more they will be blurred.
