Camera Lens Cleaning - 3 Simple Lens Cleaning Methods

Camera lens cleaning videos are sometimes filled with overcomplicated, non-practical techniques. Not this one. These are the simple lens cleaning tips we all need.

There is no giant surprises here. Let me walk you through how to properly clean your lens.

METHOD 1
Use a blower and gentle blow away any dust from your lens. Often this is all you will need to do to clean your lens as loose dust settles on it.

DO NOT blow with your breath, unless you want spittle on the lens, which will show up in the photos and will be harder to clean. But a blower - they are dirt cheap.

METHOD 2
Use a microfiber cloth to clean the lens. Do not clean up and down, but clean the lens in circular patterns (which is how it would have been polished to begin with).

This will clear off more difficult dirt.

METHOD 3
Use lens fluid on your microfiber cloth to give it a deeper cleaning. You can also use distilled or bottled water. (DO NOT USE TAP WATER). Use the same technique as above. The is the best way to clean your lens, but takes more time and work.

Ensure you clean:
- your filters, both sides
- front of your lens
- rear of your lens (yes dust gets there too!, but lest frequent is usually fine)

Note that a canon camera lens cleaning is the same as a Nikon camera lens cleaning, and same for Sony, Olympus, etc. Once you learn how to clean a lens, it will work for any of them.

Not in the video - WHEN TO CLEAN A CAMERA LENS.

This is a common question. My advice on this is two points.

First - often. Nothing is worse than a dirty lens when you have taken an amazing video. While some spots can be fixed (check out my video on how to do that here - https://youtu.be/Kq_PEeFTT5E), it is not always fixable.

Second - check the lens visually before you start shooting. If you see any dust/dirt/streaks/etc, start cleaning right away. I would also check periodically during your shoot to make sure nothing got on the lens.

THERE YOU HAVE IT. I think these methods are the best way to clean your lens. It is simple, and all are items you can carry in your camera bag.
