Creative Photography Lighting DIY - Light Painting Flash DIY Lesson - Creative Photography Lighting

Get on target with this CREATIVE PHOTOGRAPHY LIGHTING DIY technique. I will show you have to make your own CUSTOM flash snoot to help your LIGHT PAINTING PHOTOGRAPHY. This lesson is aimed at the beginner to intermediate photographer who owns a flash and wants to learn how to create creative photography lighting.

While this technique and lesson is aimed as those who want to do some light painting photography, the end product (a DIY flash snoot) and lesson can be applied to some other areas with controlled lighting needs.

So lets start with the build - a DIY flash snoot!

Flash Snoot
===============================

A flash snoot is a flash attachment that create a long tunnel on your flash so the light is not as wide.

In my lesson, I do one SECRET TRICK to make it very, very narrow without making the snoot longer.

- get a cereal of crack box
- open all the seams
- place flash head (sideways) on the narrow part of the box
- fold over the box so it comes over the top
- cut excess box from that side
- do the same on other side
- use gaffer tape (https://amzn.to/2I9lLvf) to tape the box up so it is taped everywhere
SECRET TRICK
- get a scrap piece the size of the top
- poke a small hole in it
- tape it to the top (ensure a seal all around)
- place on flash

This will create a VERY FOCUSED, BRIGHT light at any spot you want. Not bad for a DIY false snoot.
The Technique
=================================

Here is the light paining photography setup that I use.

- use a room you can turn off all light on (and eliminate all outside light if day time)
- find a subject (often an object) and place it on something black/dark
- ensure a black background
- place camera on tripod, manual focus on the area of interest on subject (and frame out of focus area too)
- image stabilization off
- set M mode - aperture wide (maybe 4.0) and shutter get to at least 2-3 seconds (extend as needed)
- turn off all lights, press shutter release
- use test mode on flash (NOTE the FLASH is in your HANDS!!) and paint the core areas of interest with light
- may need a few shots per spot or more

Check each shot and adjust your technique

WHAT IS GAFFER TAPE?
=====================

Its a photography/videographer tape normally used to tape down wires/etc on the floor. However, it can be used to make DIY flash snoots like I did, and a while lot more. It is very sticky with MINIMAL residue. You can get a firm hold and not damage paper (often) when taking it off.
