This dream became a reality in 1949 with the debut of the Kurtis Sport Car—a vehicle that would go on to become a legend.

After World War II, Frank Kurtis rose to fame for building race cars that triumphed at the Indianapolis 500. He saw a gap in the market for sports cars that everyday drivers could enjoy, as most high-performance cars in the United States at the time existed only on racetracks. Drawing on his racing expertise, he set out to create a car that was not only beautiful, but also fast, reliable, and easy to drive.

The Kurtis Sport Car was built using the chassis and components of a 1949 Ford, but featured an entirely new aluminum body with clean, flowing lines that gave it a distinctively American sports car identity. It was an open-top two-seater, most often powered by Ford V8 engines producing between 82 and 160 horsepower—enough to push the car beyond 170 km/h (about 105 mph). One of the very first models even graced the cover of Motor Trend magazine in 1949, a proud moment that proved American cars could be as sporty and luxurious as their European counterparts.

Despite its appeal to sports car enthusiasts, the Kurtis Sport Car was produced in very limited numbers due to its high production costs and low profit margins—only 36 units were ever built. In 1950, Frank Kurtis sold the production rights to businessman Earl Muntz, who modified the design into a four-seater and rebranded it as the Muntz Jet. Around 198 units of the Muntz Jet were produced before the model was discontinued.
