How many cars have ever been built specifically to please health-conscious cycling enthusiasts? The Fiat Cinquecento Z-Eco is one of those rare examples. This concept car was developed from the base of the original Fiat Cinquecento, a hugely popular small car of its era. Renowned design house Zagato reimagined it with a new, flexible concept focused on convenience.

The car was modified by removing most of the passenger seats, leaving only the driver’s seat and one rear seat behind the driver. In place of the missing seats, a special slot was created to store a bicycle on the right side of the vehicle. This allowed the driver to travel by car to the outskirts of the city and then switch to cycling into the urban area, avoiding parking hassles and traffic congestion. Zagato defined this concept as a “hybrid style of commuting.”

Beyond its versatility, the Z-Eco was redesigned with an aerodynamic, egg-shaped body and a rear window cut down to half its size to reduce drag. These changes gave the car a unique and distinctive look unlike anything else. However, it was not without flaws. Carrying a bicycle inside the vehicle obstructed visibility, especially since the car was not fitted with a right-side mirror. In addition, with the weight unevenly distributed to one side, handling could be compromised during turns.

The Z-Eco was built as a one-off prototype to showcase an environmentally friendly vision of personal mobility. At the time, it successfully drew public attention. Yet in today’s world, it may not seem quite as exciting anymore—after all, if you want to carry a bicycle with your car, you can simply mount a bike rack or fit it into the trunk.
