Baur was a renowned coachbuilder from Stuttgart, best known among classic BMW enthusiasts for its iconic conversions. The company earned a reputation for transforming BMW 3 Series and 5 Series models into the legendary “Top Cabriolet” versions. By replacing the original hardtops with folding fabric roofs, Baur created stylish convertibles that could be enjoyed at will. Notable examples include the TC1, based on the BMW E21, and the TC2, based on the E30—both officially recognized by BMW as partner projects.

However, what few people know is that there was also a model called the Baur TC3, which never reached production.

Back in 1980, Baur aimed to go beyond simply making convertibles and set out to develop a true sports car. Leveraging its close relationship with BMW and years of experience, the company created the TC3. Unlike its previous conversions, the TC3 was built on an all-new tubular racing frame, making it both lightweight and structurally rigid. Its proportions were entirely reimagined, giving it the appearance of a low-slung, elongated coupé-roadster—closer to a European concept car than a modified 3 Series.

Under the hood, the TC3 initially used the BMW 325i’s 2.5-liter inline-six, producing around 170 horsepower. There were even experiments with a larger 3.5-liter engine that could deliver nearly 280 horsepower.

Despite the progress, BMW decided not to push the project forward. At the time, the company was already developing the innovative BMW Z1 roadster in-house, and the TC3 was seen as overlapping with BMW’s own plans. As a result, the TC3 was never greenlit for production.

Ultimately, only one prototype was ever built. It stands today as a reflection of Baur’s ambition to move beyond being just a coachbuilder and into the realm of full-fledged sports car manufacturing—an ambition that, unfortunately, never had the chance to materialize.
