A Beach Buggy, simply put, is a vehicle designed for fun driving along sandy beaches. Most of them are open-top, with the roof removed, oversized tires fitted, and built to cruise over sand while enjoying the sea breeze. Back in the 1960s, Europe saw the birth of a particularly unique buggy created from the innovative ideas of a Dutch engineer. This vehicle came from DAF—a brand most people today associate with trucks. However, this was not a truck at all, but a small car with a special design that allowed it to perform on sand better than some four-wheel-drive vehicles.

What makes the DAF Buggy unusual and fascinating isn’t its appearance, but what lies beneath it. While most buggies rely on manual transmissions and careful clutch control to prevent wheel spin on sand, DAF chose to use the technology it knew best: the Variomatic system, the predecessor of today’s CVT transmissions. Variomatic uses rubber belts to deliver continuous power without interruptions from gear changes, unlike manual gearboxes. Those brief interruptions are often the critical moments when vehicles get stuck in sand. This gave the DAF Buggy a clear advantage—it was easy to drive, required no clutch control, and simply pressing the accelerator allowed it to climb sand dunes smoothly and effortlessly.

The engine was a horizontally opposed two-cylinder unit, ranging from 600 cc to 750 cc depending on the model. Beyond its smooth driving characteristics, the DAF Buggy had another remarkable feature that few vehicles could match: it could drive in reverse just as fast as it could go forward. Thanks to the Variomatic system, the reverse gear ratio was continuously variable, just like the forward gears.

In the past, DAF cars were often seen as vehicles for older drivers because of their ease of use. But when transformed into a buggy, DAF became a symbol of pure fun—something truly special and unlike any other car of its time.
