KRS-One Rap Artist Became A Rapper For Personal Reasons

I made this video years ago when making a film for high school students about personal ethics – how to define your personal ethics so that, if an emergency occurred and you were in an important job that mattered, you would know what you felt was the right or wrong thing to do. KRS-One agreed to give me his time to appear in my film.

KRS-One, born Lawrence Krisna Parker on August 20, 1965, in the Bronx, New York, is a highly influential figure in the hip-hop community, renowned for his contributions as a rapper, producer, and activist. The stage name KRS-One stands for "Knowledge Reigns Supreme Over Nearly Everyone," which reflects his intellectual approach to music and activism.

KRS-One rose to prominence in the mid-1980s as the founder of the hip-hop group Boogie Down Productions (BDP) alongside DJ Scott La Rock. Their debut album, "Criminal Minded" (1987), is considered a landmark in the hip-hop genre, introducing a raw, aggressive sound that paved the way for future developments in hardcore hip-hop. However, the direction of KRS-One's music shifted significantly after the death of Scott La Rock in 1987, with subsequent albums focusing more on social issues, violence in the hip-hop community, and self-improvement.

KRS-One is renowned for his lyrical dexterity, deep voice, and conscious lyricism, which often tackle themes such as social justice, knowledge, and self-awareness. He is considered one of the pioneers of conscious rap, using his platform to inspire positive change and to educate listeners on a variety of issues, including violence, racism, and inequality.

Throughout his career, KRS-One has released numerous albums and singles that have left a lasting impact on hip-hop music and culture. Notable works include "By All Means Necessary" (1988), "Ghetto Music: The Blueprint of Hip Hop" (1989), and "Edutainment" (1990), among others. His hit songs like "Sound of da Police" (1993) and "My Philosophy" (1988) are considered hip-hop classics.

In addition to his music career, KRS-One founded the Temple of Hip Hop, an organization aimed at preserving and promoting hip-hop culture. The Temple of Hip Hop advocates for hip-hop as a genuine cultural movement that encompasses music, art, dance, fashion, and language, promoting a positive message and way of life.

KRS-One's influence on hip-hop is profound, earning him respect as one of the genre's most respected figures. His dedication to the craft of emceeing, along with his efforts to use music as a tool for education and social change, has cemented his status as a legend in the hip-hop community. Beyond his musical accomplishments, KRS-One's impact lies in his commitment to using hip-hop as a force for positive change, making him a pivotal figure in the genre's evolution.
