Airplane Travelers In 1995. What Has Changed (& Hasn't)?
So much about this clip interests me. In some ways, the airport experience is shockingly similar to what it was in 1995. It seems as though the technologies and services haven't kept up with changes in the times. In other ways, if you look closely, it is surprisingly different to be an airport traveler today. This is the San Jose airport on a spring afternoon, a business traveling day. There are many women and many men traveling. Almost everyone is surprisingly well dressed. I have no opinion about that but they are wearing suits and ties and "proper" dresses etc. Almost no children if you notice. The communications technologies seem old but not ancient. And in general, the travelers that I recorded that day with a Betacam SP video camera seemed deadly serious. It seems as though no one was having any fun, and so many looked overworked. In those days I traveled from the west to the east once a week. All of us regulars received upgrades and often flew in first class. I got used to it, in fact numb to it until 9/11 when things got more strict. I still love flying and of course getting someplace that I'd like to be. In those days, I knew other men and a very few women who had a million miles of travel in one year!, flying once every two or three days. They received special benefits but the experience became mind numbing for sure. They were like traveling machines. I look forward to reading the thoughts and memories from others who flew regularly back then.
