Fake quotes attributed to famous authors are all over the internet. And they're bad business for brains! Don't be a sucker for these by believing them uncritically, and don't repost quotes you're not sure are actually by the thinker they're attributed to, or you're making yourself part of the problem

In this video, I identify ten particularly egregiously fake quotes that are definitely not by Plato, but which we see falsely and frequently attributed to him in quote pages, images, and videos. I not only discuss where the quote originates from (when we know), but also why each of them is something Plato wouldn't have said, based on what we know Plato did say in his existing texts.

Here are the fake quotes we're calling out in this video:
1. Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle
2. Watch a man at play for an hour and you can learn more about him than in talking to him for a year.
3. Wise men talk because they have something to say; fools, because they would like to say something
4. We can easily forgive a child who is afraid of the dark; the real tragedy of life is when men are afraid of the light
5. Music is a moral law. It gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, a charm to sadness, gaiety and life to everything.
6. Man is a being in search of meaning
7. Atheism is a disease of the soul, before it becomes an error of the understanding
8. Excellence is not a gift, but a skill that takes practice. We do not act rightly because we are excellent, in fact, we achieve excellence by acting rightly
9. Necessity is the mother of invention
10. Human behavior flows from three main sources: desire, emotion, and knowledge
