This is a video in my new Core Concepts series -- designed to provide students and lifelong learners a brief discussion focused on one main concept from a classic philosophical text and thinker.

This Core Concept video focuses on Franz Kafka's classic short story, "In The Penal Colony", and discusses the explorer's verdict and reasoned judgement upon the mode of justice and execution, the machine that inscribes the imperative a prisoner has violated upon their body. The officer attempts to get the explorer on his side by explaining the workings of the machine and the intentions behind it, but the explorer makes his condemnation of the practice clear.
