Daniel Skelly and Albertus McCreary watched the troops advancing into town, heard the sounds of battle, and walked through the devastation on the farmland after the battle. As adults, each would write his memoirs, recounting those experiences. They also attended the speeches on November 19, 1863, and they shared their impressions of President Abraham Lincoln and keynote speaker Edward Everett.
