ಒಂದೇ, ಒಂದೇ, ಒಂದೇ ಎಂದು ಈ ಉದ್ಯಮಿ ಸಾರಿದ್ದೇನು?

Sometimes phrases in English mean something different than they seem.  These types of phrases are called idioms or idiomatic expressions.  Idioms like “sing your heart out” can be confusing because the meaning does not always make sense if you translate them literally.  However, if you learn what they represent or symbolize, then you will be able to use them in everyday conversations!

One common idiom among musicians is “sing your heart out,” but what does that really mean?  Does it mean that your heart “comes out” when you sing?  Does it mean that you sing really loudly?  Or does it mean that you cry when you sing?

When musicians sing their hearts out, it means that they are singing with a lot of passion or enthusiasm.  They have practiced a lot and are singing the best that they can.  Even more, they are singing with emotion because they love to sing and express themselves through music.  In other words, they are singing with their hearts.

So, if you know someone who loves to sing and is going to perform soon, you can tell them, “Sing your heart out!” to encourage them to sing their best.  If you recently went to a concert and the performer was singing passionately, then you can tell your friends, “The concert was great!  The performer really sang his heart out.”
Not a singer?  No problem!  Other musicians can play their hearts out, too.  If a jazz saxophonist is improvising, or creating music spontaneously, then he is probably playing his heart out.  If a piano soloist is performing for a concerto, then she is most likely playing her heart out.  Why?  They are playing their hearts out because they are playing their instruments with passion, skill, and a deep love for music.  They are expressing themselves and giving all the energy and focus they have to performing.

Can you use this idiom with other action words?  Yes!  Now that you know what “sing your heart out” and “play your heart out” mean, try using other verbs like cook, write, read, and dance to make new sentences.  Have fun practicing this new English idiom!
