BULLYING: Long-Term Effects

Bullying is a problem that has afflicted so many of us out there, but once the bullying is over, is the psychological damage it causes also done? Research is showing that the negative effects of bullying lasts as much as 40 years (though I have seen longer in my practice). Whether the bullying was physical, verbal, or social, the psychological scars remain leading to increased depression, anxiety, trauma, troubled relationships, employment issues, and even a higher suicide rate. Some victims of bullying even go on to become bullies themselves. In this video I discuss what bullying is (including cyberbullying), the long-range dangers of bullying, the mind-set of the bully, those that befriend and support the bully, those that turn a blind-eye to the bully, and what you can do as an adult to help yourself if you’ve been bullied when you were younger. Being bullied at this time? StopBullying.gov is a great resource. If you are gay, bi, or trans also try the TrevorLifeline at (866) 488-7386.
