Symptoms
Identify at least 1 way you experience each of the following symptoms
1. Downplaying and defensiveness about how much time you spend on internet use, social networking and/or gaming
2. Lack of control: Spending more and more time browsing the internet, social networking and/or gaming to get the same enjoyment
3. Withdrawing from friends, family, or your spouse to the point of disrupting family, social, or work life
4. Experiencing feelings of anger, depression, moodiness, anxiety, or restlessness when you’re not browsing the internet, social networking and/or gaming
5. Spending significant sums of money for online services, computer upgrades, or gaming systems
6. Preoccupation: Thinking obsessively about being on the computer, social networking or playing video games even when doing other things
Consequences
Identify which of the following consequences you have experienced as a result of internet use, social networking and/or gaming:
Emotional
• Depression
• Anxiety
• Irritability
• Difficulty controlling anger
• Apathy (lack of caring) about most things
• Other: ___________________________
Summary
Like other addictions, internet addiction can have physical, social, financial and emotional consequences
In our digital age, it is highly unlikely that people can completely unplug.
Similar to other behavioral addictions like eating and sex, it is necessary to identify the motivations behind the internet use
Additionally, by its very rewarding nature, internet addiction will cause neurochemical imbalances which can lead to depression and apathy.
Recovery involves addressing
• Underlying mood, self esteem and coping issues
• Identifying triggers for use and ways to deal with them
• Creating a relapse prevention plan
Physical
• Carpal Tunnel
• Migraines
• Sleep Disturbances/Insufficient sleep
• Circadian rhythm disruption
• Depression/Neurotransmitter Imbalance
• Backaches
• Other: __________________________
Social
• Relationship strain
• Discomfort in face to face situations
• Difficulty talking to other people
• Inability to effectively communicate thoughts or feelings
• Lack of ability to take other people’s perspectives
• Inability or agitation “sitting still”
• Other: ________________________
What Makes a Video Game Addictive
Identify which internet games/sites/activities are problematic for you.
For each of those games/sites/activities, identify which addictive characteristics they have.
• High Score
• Beating the Game
• No Ending to the Game – i.e. Massive Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games (MMORPGs)
• Role Playing
• Novelty/Discovery
• A good portion of World of Warcraft is spent exploring imaginary worlds, and Minecraft is spent designing new worlds
• Relationships
• Acceptance
• A place to anonymously try out different personas
Risk Factors
Not everyone becomes addicted. The games/sites/activities you have difficulty with are serving a purpose (excitement, acceptance, escape…). Part of recovery means identifying the benefits to the behavior to you. Some of the more common benefits are listed below.
• Need to escape
o What am I trying to escape from?
o How else could I deal with these issues besides escaping/avoiding them?
• Poor interpersonal relationships
o What do I not like or find fulfilling about my relationships?
o What would I like my relationships to be like?
o How can I develop these skills and/or relationships?
• Easily bored
o Are there particular times when I am more prone to being bored?
o What are six things I could do instead?
• Sensation seeking/adrenaline junkies
o We all enjoy the occasional rush. Over time, too much stimulation means it is much more difficult to get that same rush.
o What can I do to enjoy life without always having to have a rush?
o What does the rush do for me?
It makes me feel…..
o How else can I meet that need?
