Highway 61 BLUES Sung By A Barber While Cutting Hair. Authentic Blues
Mississippi Delta Blues. Just a barbershop in the middle of the Mississippi Delta with an extraordinary and multi-talented Barber. The delta the home of the Mississippi Delta Blues, BB King blues. That wonderful music came from this place and folks outside of the region begin to hear it just a few years before this was recorded.
It was filmed by one of my favorite 16mm documentary filmmakers, William Ferris with whom I have done a documentary interview that is quite extraordinary (https://youtu.be/HsMobpl2Sr4). Ferris took a camera and a sound rig and went to places “in his neighborhood” and most folks said yes to his recording stories and music and culture that was and is, unique and beautiful.
Blues music is a genre that originated in the African-American communities of the Deep South of the United States around the end of the 19th century. It developed from roots in African musical traditions, African-American work songs, spirituals, and folk music. Blues music is characterized by its use of specific chord progressions, typically the twelve-bar blues; its emphasis on the expressive power of the blue note; and its lyrical themes, often related to the trials and tribulations of life, lost love, hardship, and resilience.
Key Characteristics that define Blues:
The most common form is the twelve-bar blues, featuring a specific, repeated chord pattern over twelve measures. Some notes are played at a slightly lower pitch than those of the major scale giving the delta blues its distinctive sound. A call & response comes from African musical tradition where a singer's phrase (call) is answered by an instrument (response). Lyrics often deal with personal adversity, troubles, and the realities of life, expressed with raw emotion.
