October 3rd 1990 - German Reunification | HISTORY CALENDAR

TODAY IN HISTORY, On October 3rd 1990 the GDR joined the Federal Republic of Germany, reuniting the divided country. Since then, October 3rd is a National Holiday in Germany. After the cheers and jubilation at the opening of the wall it was obvious to introduce the 9th of November as a new National Holiday Day for all of Germany. Like no other day does the 9th of November bear the dark and bright sides of German history. November 9th in Germany, also means in the perceptions of the International community, the pogroms against Jews of November 9th 1938. Therefore in 1990 it seemed more advisable to the delegates of the two German states to make the 3rd of October a National Holiday.
