September 25th 1944 - Volkssturm | HISTORY CALENDAR

TODAY IN HISTORY: On September 25th 1944 Hitlers regime mobilizes the last reserves for the murderous "total war". Hitler orders the establishment of the Volkssturm” ("People's Storm"). All able-bodied men between the ages 16 and 60 are recruited. 6 million people total. In crash courses the young and old are trained on weapon handling. They are to swear to Hitler personally. They go into a hopeless futile battle against heavily armed professional opponents. But many of the “people's storm” are blinded by hate and propaganda. They are glowing admirers of the leader. With zeal they go to work. Accordingly the losses are high. Tens of thousands of the “Volkssturm” men pay with their lives for their faith in the leader and many are arrested.
