Scotland | The Case for Another Independence Referendum

Should there be a second referendum on Scottish independence? Just 5 years after Scotland held a vote to break away from the United Kingdom, Britain's decision to leave the European Union has led many to argue that another independence vote is now justified. But is it?

In September 2014, Scotland went to the polls to vote on independence. By a margin of 55-45% they voted to remain a part of the United Kingdom. However, while the referendum was billed as a once in a generation opportunity, a little over five years later the question of a second Scottish independence referendum is back on the table. This has been driven by the United Kingdom's decision to leave the European Union (EU). In the view of the Scottish Government, this represents a material change of circumstances warranting another vote. However, the British Government disagrees. In this video, I asses the case for a second Scottish independence referendum (indyref2) based on Brexit - ultimately arguing that Britain's departure from the EU does in fact amount to a material change of circumstances meriting a new vote.
