SCOTLAND | Could it hold an unauthorised independence referendum?

Could - or should - Scotland hold another independence referendum against the wishes of the British Government? While there is certainly a strong, if not unassailable, moral and political case for a new vote, does it make sense to hold one at all costs?

Hello and welcome! My name is James Ker-Lindsay. On this channel, I take an informed look at International Relations with a particular focus on territorial conflicts, secession, independence movements and new countries.

2021 will see the question of Scotland's independence return to the fore of British politics. Scottish Parliamentary elections in May 2021 are likely to see the Scottish National Party (SNP) win a resounding victory. Standing on a platform of holding another independence vote, following the one in September 2014, this will bring it into direct opposition with the British Government. But should it go ahead and try to hold it anyway? While there may be ways to press ahead with another referendum regardless of London's view, one has to ask whether it would really make sense to do so? Before going down this path, the independence movement needs to be clear about its end goals. More to the point, and as I argue, it must avoid a unilateral declaration of independence at all costs.
