Why are GREECE and TURKEY on the brink of CONFLICT?

Greece Turkey relations have often been troubled. However, the Eastern Mediterranean neighbours now face a full on crisis as they teeter on the brink of conflict. In recent months, the two countries have signed competing maritime boundary agreements with Libya and Egypt and Turkey has started energy exploration in waters claimed by Greece. But what exactly are the historical, political and legal roots of these latest tensions?

Hello and welcome! My name is James Ker-Lindsay. Thanks for joining me to take an informed look at International Relations with a particular focus on territorial conflicts, secession, independence movements and new countries.

Over the course of the summer of 2020, Greek-Turkish relations have become increasingly tense. These have been centred on a long-standing territorial dispute between the two countries over the demarcation of the continental shelf. While Greece argues that each of its islands is entitled to a continental shelf, Turkey disputes this. Ankara argues that the Aegean Sea and Eastern Mediterranean should instead be divided equitably. In addition, the Turkish Government also opposes Greece's right to extend its territorial waters and contests the extent of Greek airspace. In this video, I look at these territorial issues. In particular, I show that many of these had in fact been addressed under the terms of the 1923 Treaty of Lausanne. However, changes to Greece's territory, the evolution of international law, and the discovery of energy resources in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean have all served to renew disputes over the territory that once appeared to have been settled.
