Nagorno-Karabakh | The conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan

Many regard Nagorno-Karabakh as a 'frozen conflict'. However, renewed fighting between Armenia and Azerbaijan in July 2020 highlighted the ongoing tensions between the two countries over the breakaway territory. In this video, I explore the origins of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and explain why it remains such a deep source of instability in the south Caucasus.

Hello and welcome! My name is James Ker-Lindsay. Thanks for joining me to take an informed look at International Relations with a particular focus on territorial conflicts, secession, independence movements and new countries.

There is a tendency to think of de facto states as frozen conflicts. While they may have emerged from armed confrontation, they essentially exist as an essentially peaceful stalemate - albeit with heavily militarised boundaries. However, behind many of these so-called frozen conflicts, there is a real potential for a return to fighting. The case of Nagorno-Karabakh - otherwise known as Nagorno-Karabakh, the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (NKR) or the Republic of Artsakh - is a particularly important example of this. For almost thirty years, since a ceasefire was called after a brutal war between Armenia and Azerbaijan over the territory, it has existed in a very uneasy peace, constantly teetering on the brink of a return to conflict. More to the point, if a major conflict were to occur is could have catastrophic consequences.
