What is Remedial Secession?

Remedial Secession has often be thought of as offering a new route for countries to become independent. In the face of gross human rights abuses, it has been argued that peoples should have the right to breakaway as an emergency measure to protect themselves - thereby allowing other states to come to their assistance. But just how viable is this idea in reality? In the video, I look at the concept of Remedial Secession and show why it is very difficult to put into practice.

Hello and welcome! My name is James Ker-Lindsay. Thanks for joining me to take an informed look at International Relations with a particular focus on territorial conflicts, secession, independence movements and new countries.

For many decades, scholars and some practitioners have argued that national groups facing the most extreme forms of human rights violations, such as genocide or ethnic cleansing, should have a right to secede as an emergency measure to help save themselves. However, while this was first articulated in the 1970s, the idea didn't start to catch on until the 1990s, and, more specifically, after the publication of 'Responsibility to Protect' (R2P) in 2001. However, in reality, the idea has a number of very practical shortcomings, both in terms of international politics and under international law. As I explain in this video, even if the idea had some merit at the time, the highly fractured international system - as well as the deep-seated concerns over secession in general - makes it even more difficult to see the idea put into practice today.
