The Kashmir Conflict between India and Pakistan is perhaps the most complex conflict in the world. As well as being the most dangerous territorial dispute on the international stage, it is also one of the most seemingly difficult to solve. After almost 75 years, the prospects for a settlement seem increasingly remote. So, what is the Kashmir conflict about? And is there any hope that it can ever be resolved?

The Kashmir Conflict - also known as the Kashmir Dispute or the Kashmir Issue - has brought India and Pakistan, two nuclear powers with a combined population of over 1.5 billion inhabitants, to full-scale war or major military confrontation on three separate occasions since 1947. However, after almost 70 years, there is little sign that it can be resolved. While the United Nations originally proposed a referendum on whether Kashmir should join India or Pakistan, this is no longer seen as an option by India. However, every other potential settlement option - such as redrawing the current line of control, granting Kashmir independence in whole or in part, or even some form of extensive autonomy - also appears to be off the table. In addition, options for international involvement to help find a settlement also seem to be impossible. Not only is Kashmir the world's most dangerous conflict, it also seems to be the most intractable as well.
