What is the BELARUS RUSSIA Union State? // Future Country, Loose Confederation or Mere Organisation?

What is the Union State of Russia and Belarus? Unrest in Belarus has cast light on the country’s complex relationship with neighbouring Russia. In 1999, the two countries created an entity called the Union State. But what exactly is it? Is it a blueprint for a new united country? Or is it a plan for some sort of loose confederation? Or perhaps it is merely a type of regional organisation, as some now suggest? This video explores the Union State between Russia and Belarus and attempt to show where it is likely to go. Ultimately, will Russia and Belarus unite?

Russia and Belarus share a close relationship. Despite becoming separate independent states following the collapse of the Soviet Union, in 1991, the two countries embarked on a project to pursue gradual integration. This eventually led to a Treaty on the Establishment of a Union State, in December 1999. However, in the two decades since then, the idea seems to have made little progress. In part, this is due to the tense relationship between Alexander Lukashenko, the leader of Belarus, and Vladimir Putin, the Russian President. However, it also seems to have been driven by the sheer difference in their respective geographical size and populations as well as huge differences in their economic and political strength. That said, the protests against Lukashenko that arose in August 2020 following flawed elections in Belarus have again raised questions about the Union State. If Lukashenka (as Lukashenko is also spelt) relies on Russia to stay in power, will Moscow demand closer integration as the price to pay? And what happens if he falls. Will the Belarus opposition abandon the Union State?
