Scriabin: Piano Sonata No. 3 in F-sharp minor, Op. 23-Ⅰ. Drammatico (Analysis)

Scriabin: Piano Sonata No. 3 in F-sharp minor, Op. 23-Ⅰ. Drammatico, F-sharp minor, 3/4 time, Sonata form (Analysis)

Composed between 1897 and 1898, this work reflects an intermediary style in which Scriabin’s Romantic lyricism coexists with Symbolist ambiguity. While following the traditional four-movement structure, its melodies and harmonies flow freely and spontaneously, with chromatic progressions and unexpected modulations evoking inner conflict and a mysterious atmosphere. Thematic motifs recur across movements, providing cyclical unity. In particular, the tragic conclusion of the final movement can be interpreted as an allusion to religious and metaphysical ideas.

Ⅰ. Drammatico, F-sharp minor, 3/4 time, Sonata form
The first movement, built on chromatic instability and intense emotion, alternates between fierce motifs and lyrical melodies, creating cycles of tension and release. Its development within the sonata form is characterized by freedom and improvisatory flair.
