Weber: Piano Sonata No. 4 in E minor, Op. 70-I. Moderato (Analysis)

Weber: Piano Sonata No. 4 in E minor, Op. 70-I. Moderato, E minor, 4/4 time, Sonata form

This sonata is one of Weber’s most important contributions to early Romantic piano music. While based on the traditional Classical sonata form, it emphasizes originality and dramatic expression. Consisting of four movements, each possesses its own distinct and diverse musical character.

I. Moderato, E minor, 4/4 time, Sonata form
The first movement follows a traditional sonata form and presents a majestic character in which Weber's distinctive motivic development technique is beautifully integrated with Romantic expression. The first theme is introduced with a resolute motif and dramatic melody, conveying a sense of solemnity in a minor key. The transition section intensifies the tension through modulation into various keys. In contrast, the second theme appears in G major, the relative major, and is lyrical and gentle in character, creating a lingering and poetic atmosphere. In the development section, both themes are fragmented and transformed, undergoing harmonic and motivic development. Finally, in the recapitulation, the first theme returns in the home key of C minor, and the second theme is restated in the same key. The coda maintains the movement's tension and coherence, bringing it to a purposeful and unified conclusion.
