Scriabin: Piano Sonata No. 3 in F-sharp minor, Op. 23-Ⅱ. Allegretto

Scriabin: Piano Sonata No. 3 in F-sharp minor, Op. 23-Ⅱ. Allegretto, E-flat Major, 4/8 time, Compound Ternary Form

Composed between 1897 and 1898, this work reflects an intermediary style in which Scriabin’s Romantic lyricism coexists with Symbolist ambiguity. While following the traditional four-movement structure, its melodies and harmonies flow freely and spontaneously, with chromatic progressions and unexpected modulations evoking inner conflict and a mysterious atmosphere. Thematic motifs recur across movements, providing cyclical unity. In particular, the tragic conclusion of the final movement can be interpreted as an allusion to religious and metaphysical ideas.

Ⅱ. Allegretto, E-flat Major, 4/8 time, Compound Ternary Form
The second movement has a light, elegant, dance-like character, contrasting the solemnity of the first movement. Its rhythmic melodies and brisk tempo highlight delicate expression and graceful flow. In the middle section, the music shifts to a dreamlike atmosphere, hinting at Scriabin’s characteristic mysticism.
