Walmart Now Selling... Health Insurance Plans for the Public?!

Move over big employers, health insurance agents, and even state programs, there’s a new offering in town.

Walmart is rolling out health insurance for consumers, including those on Medicare.

In a job posting for Medicare agents, Walmart wrote:
“You will be responsible for helping the Medicare community in a meaningful way, by enrolling customers in Medicare products and services over the phone.”

The new initiative comes after Walmart announced it was opening its first health clinic in Georgia, where consumers would have access to dental, mental health counseling, X-rays and audiology services all in one place.

The huge retailer plans to open several such clinics in Georgia and Arkansas.

A Walmart corporate announcement said:
“Patients have responded favorably to our low, transparent pricing for key healthcare services, regardless of insurance status. They’re also appreciative of the convenience of our facilities.”

There’s no doubt about that. Who wouldn’t want to get a kid swabbed for mono at the same place they buy food, auto parts, school supplies, and lawn furniture?

This brings to mind when Sears bought securities firm Dean Witter Reynolds and immediately people started calling the department store “Stocks and Socks.”

That didn’t end well, but Walmart has a lot better track record over the last 30 years than Sears.
