Understanding What Happens with Insulin and Glucose When You Eat a Meal | Dr. Robert Lustig
Levels Advisor Robert Lustig, MD, explains glucose spikes and insulin resistance.
When you eat food, glucose enters the bloodstream. As a result, your pancreas will produce insulin.
Insulin rises to clear the glucose from your bloodstream by shuttling it into your cells to be used as energy.
How much insulin you make and how well it works matters. Unless you take steps to maintain insulin sensitivity, you will become more insulin resistant with age.
Insulin resistance happens when beta cells in the pancreas get overworked and stop producing enough insulin to clear glucose, giving you a glucose spike. Frequent glucose spikes cause damage to your vascular system.
Insulin resistance also happens when cells become resistant to insulin’s signaling to let glucose in. As a result, your glucose will stay elevated for longer.
Glucose spikes and the inability to clear glucose quickly from the bloodstream are signs of metabolic dysfunction. Both lead to illness and death.
However, you can take steps to maintain or increase your insulin sensitivity.
