Merritt A. Edson – The Colonel Who Saved Guadalcanal

Marine Colonel Merritt “Red Mike” Edson became a legend during the Battle of Guadalcanal. On the nights of September 13–14, 1942, his 1st Raider Battalion held a narrow jungle ridge against a massive Japanese assault. Outnumbered and nearly surrounded, Edson moved through the lines under fire, rallying exhausted Marines and calling artillery dangerously close to his own position. His leadership turned certain defeat into victory—securing Henderson Field and the future of the Pacific campaign. For his extraordinary courage and command under fire, Edson received the Medal of Honor.
