Maximo Yabes – Vietnam War Medal of Honor Hero

Maximo Yabes was a U.S. Army First Sergeant who received the Medal of Honor for his extraordinary heroism during the Vietnam War. On February 26, 1967, near Phu Hoa Dong, his company was suddenly attacked by a much larger enemy force. Under withering fire, Yabes moved across open ground to rally his men and secure their defenses. When a machine gun threatened to overrun his unit, he single-handedly charged and destroyed it with grenades. Later, he threw himself onto a grenade to shield his comrades, suffering fatal wounds. His fearless actions and ultimate sacrifice saved countless lives and embodied the highest traditions of the Army.
