How To Build a Bath Tray from Pallet Wood

This one is all about making a practical, yet beautiful bathtub caddy from pallet wood in as little as 15 minutes. My particular bathtub tray is not clear coated or protected from water because I built this quickly to be used right away, however, you can always put some clear coat on yours to make it stand up to the elements!

Step 1:
The first thing you’re going to want to do is cut the pallet wood to the desired dimensions. Do this again with a second board. This will probably be 3 or 4 inches wider than your bathtub. Then sand these boards extremely well, especially if you are using pallet wood.

Step 2:
Once cut, make 2 Kreg jig holes about 6” from the end of the boards as shown below:

Step 3:
Then put some wood glue on the edge of the board, butt it up to the other board, clamp the 2 boards, and then screw the boards together with the Kreg screws.

Step 4:
Cut the 2x2 boards to the length that the 2 pallet boards are wide. In my case, they are about 7”. This doesn’t need to be exact, but just make the 2x2 boards shorter than the other boards are wide.

Pre drill 2 holes into each of the 2x2s, apply glue to the other side of one of the 2x2s and then screw it into one end of the boards, about 1” from the end like image below:

For the other 2x2s, you’ll need to set the pallet wood boards onto your bath tub to get the exact measurements. Once you set it on your bath tub, mark lines where the boards rest on the outside edge. This will be the gap you need between the next 2 2x2s and these will be the pieces that secure the whole bath tray to the tub.

Secure those last 2 2x2s onto the board and you are all set for some bubbles, candles, and wine!

Conclusion and Tips:
If you really want to finish this thing up, go ahead and apply the clear coat now. Clear coat as a pretty strong smell, so I wouldn’t use it for a couple of days after applying the coat. Enjoy!
